Kindergarten expectation at Woodlands

“Learning and teaching should not stand on opposite banks and just watch the river flow by; instead, they should embark together on a journey down the water. Through an active, reciprocal exchange, teaching can strengthen learning and how to learn.”

What is a kindergarten program?

Kindergarten is an important step for your child. While kindergarten isn’t compulsory for Australian children, the Department of Education strongly recommends that all children attend a kindergarten program in the two years prior to starting school. With the Reggio Emilia approach Woodlands takes, we commit to ensuring that we encourage and empower children to be active participants in their own learning journey, rather than being seen as vessels to be filled up with knowledge, they are seen as curious, capable, and full of potential.

Research shows that quality, play-based learning is a powerful way to support children’s learning and development. The benefits last into the school years and beyond. Kindergarten improves children’s health and wellbeing, helps them to develop strong social skills, and encourages a love of learning. Children who go to kindergarten are more independent and confident and are more likely to make a smooth transition to primary school.

At Woodlands we have a Reggio approach, a part of this philosophy is Teachers, Educators and families allowing children to be actively involved in their education and allowing children to explore project-based learning. Playing is part of learning, and learning is children's most important job. The optimal mix in the 3yo and 4yo kindergarten program is having both direct teaching and free play, which will enable children to achieve their individual and group goals, while still having the ability to challenge their learning development in a safe, encouraging and engaging space.

Children should have opportunities to follow their own curiosity and interests and not be told what and how their learning should happen, their voice needs to be head, respected, listened to and embedded into learning.
