About this Policy

In the event of a chemical spill, it is essential to recognise it as an emergency situation that requires immediate and careful management. Staff members involved in any chemical procedures must ensure they are equipped with the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to safeguard their health and safety.

  • 2.2.1 Supervision At all times, reasonable precautions and adequate supervision ensure children are protected from harm and hazard
  • 2.2.2  Incident and Emergency Management  Plans to effectively manage incidents and emergencies are developed in consultation with relevant authorities, practiced, and implemented.

Purpose

To ensure that, should a chemical be spilled in the service, that it is cleaned up immediately in a safe manner.

 

Scope

This policy is relevant to all individuals associated with the Service, including children, families, staff, management, and visitors.

 

Implementation

Procedure

  • Gently escort children away from the affected area to ensure their safety.
  • Carefully contain the spill to prevent further exposure. It is important to ensure that the affected area is cleaned up thoroughly and without delay.
  • Approach with care when cleaning. Some chemicals may lack colour or odours, but may still be dangerous. Never assume a chemical is harmless
  • Review the relevant Material Safety Data Sheet to identify the chemicals involved and assess any potential hazards associated with them..
  • Refer to the manufacturer's guidelines to ensure the spill is cleaned up properly and safely.
  • Thoroughly clean and sanitise any equipment or clothing that may have come into contact with the spill to ensure safety and prevent any potential hazards.
  • If the spill renders any equipment unsafe for continued use, please ensure its proper disposal.
  • Please take a moment to review the procedures in order to understand the circumstances that led to this incident and to identify strategies that could help prevent similar occurrences in the future.
